Windows Update Cannot Check for Updates



Problem or Question:

Windows updates are not running. When run manually from control panel to check for updates, get the following error message:

“Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running”

But the correct update processes are running.


Microsoft Windows 7

Solution or Answer:

1. Run a cmd window (run it as an Administrator)

2. In the cmd window execute the following commands:

net stop wuauserv

rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old

net start wuauserv


3. Check for updates again


Unknown. Somehow the software distribution information files get corrupted, and the windows update process fails.
