Double-clicking an .xls or .xlsx file opens Microsoft Excel 2007, but nothing is displayed.



Problem or Question 

Microsoft Excel 2007 does not open. This also applies to Microsoft Word 2007.

  1. Clicking an .xls or .xlsx file opens Excel (or clicking a .doc or .docx file opens Word).
  2. But the spreadsheet or document does not display any context.
  3. The document might appear if you click something within the program.

Solution or Answer

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. On the Tools menu, choose Folder Options.
  3. On the File Types tab, find and select the .xlsx file extension
  4. Select Open.
  5. Click Edit
  6. In Application used to perform action, add "%1" at the end.
    For example: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /e "%1"
  7. Uncheck "Use DDE."
  8. Repeat for the other file extensions as needed:  .xls, .docx, .doc
