How to restore the favorites folder in Internet Explorer



Problem or Question:

I am missing my bookmarks/favorites in Internet Explorer


Win 7, XP - (Internet Explorer)

Solution or Answer:

First, locate your favorites folder, usually it is here:

In Windows 7



In Windows XP

C:\Documents and Settings\NetID\Favorites


If you found the Favorites folder and it contains the items you thought were lost, the folder needs to be pointed back to Internet Explorer.


Note: Before moving on, it is imperative to mention that you should not edit the Windows registry unless you are comfortable doing so. Deleting or altering the registry incorrectly can seriously damage the system. If you are not confident about taking these steps, consult the Service Desk at 510-885-4357.


1) Open the Registry Editor

In XP:

a) Click Start => Run

b) Type regedit in the Open field

c) Click Go.

In Windows 7:

a) Click Start

b) Type regedit into the Start Search field

c) Press Enter

2) Find Favorites under the following Registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Shell folders

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\User Shell folders

HKEY_USERS\.default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Shell folders

HKEY_USERS\.default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\User Shell folders

3) Right click it and select Modify. The Edit String dialog will open.

4) Verify that the Value Data field contains the correct location of your Favorites folder. If it does not, enter the right location to restore your missing Favorites folder to Internet Explorer.

In Windows 7:




In Windows XP:


C:\Documents and Settings\NetID\Favorites\

5) Close the registry editor

6) Open Internet Explorer to confirm that your favorites are there.
